How do I know if my child needs help?

As parents, we all have experienced that what children say and what they really mean is often not the same thing:
  • "I don't like school"
  • "I hate homework."
  • "My teacher just doesn't understand me."
  • "I am just no good at math."

These statements and others like them are frequently expressed by our children when the underlying issues are:

  • "I'm confused."
  • "I feel inadequate."
  • "I need help with my school work."

When a child struggles with schoolwork, the negative effects can be pervasive and extreme. If not addressed, these problems can have significant and often harmful effects. Students who have the benefit of the Tutor Train program do better in school, excel faster, and consequently develop high levels of self-esteem and self-confidence.

Since we all want to see the best in our children, we can too easily overlook the warning signs. It is often difficult to initially accept that our child may need help. Is this your child?

  • Reluctant to discuss school (“Oh, just forget about it.”)
  • Lacking enthusiasm toward learning (“I’m not interested in that.”)
  • Lacking motivation or confidence (“I don’t think I can really do it, no matter what.”)
  • Angry and hostile toward homework or studying (“I hate this stuff – not fun like video games.”)
  • Defensiveness and/or fear of criticism (“You’re always on my case.”)
  • Feeling defeated or giving up (“It’s too hard for me; I quit.”)
  • Self-condemning ("I'm stupid, I can't do it.")
  • Lacking in organizational skills (“So I forgot. So what?”)
  • Anxious or prone to overreact (“This stuff is scary.”)
  • Withdrawn and avoids school related questions (“Whatever.”)
What contributes to these symptoms of academic stress? Overcrowded classrooms, greater competition for limited academic funds and the dramatic increase in state testing requirements have caused a great amount of stress on students. For many parents the situation becomes overwhelming. They will often overlook the warning signs or ignore them in hopes that they will go away. What these parents may not realize is that it can take relatively few sessions to help a student reach their potential and increase confidence.  Furthermore, our program is an affordable service, which will yield fantastic returns on your investment in your child's future.
